Basement & Crawl Space Insulation
Three Methods for Insulating Basements & Crawl Spaces
Closed Cell Foam
- Creates a complete seal.
- Highest R-value.
- Will not support mold.
Perfect for hard to reach crawl spaces with dirt floors, or where not a lot of insulation can be added.
Thermax Polyisocyanurate
- R-7 per inch
- Complete air and thermal seal
- Looks clean and sturdy when properly installed
Holds up existing insulation and is more durable against storage items bumping against it
Fiberglass
- Highly ineffective.
- Mice and insects can live in it.
- Not recommended.
Fiberglass batts are highly ineffective, and are normally used as the cheapest method to meet code
Is your Basement Properly Insulated and Air Sealed?
Bad Insulation
Basement ceiling insulation is important to keep cold air out and floors warm on first floor.
The insulation above is damaged and will not work properly. The effective R-value has dropped from R19 to about an R5.
Rim Joists are basically an extenstenion of your main house walls into your basement.
Cold air will quickly go through cracks and convect through the thin wood. Rim Joist should be sealed and insulated.
Large penetrations is where the majority of cold air will be sucked up into the home.
After foaming around all penetrations drafts, heat loss will be significantly reduced.
Good Insulation
Many drafts and cold air will enter a home through its basement and drive the warm air in the house out
Common place for cold air to enter basement:
- Band Joist
- Windows
- Plumbing and Electrical penetrations
- Bulkheads and doors
*If drafts aren’t obvious, a blower door can be used to depressurize your home and make drafts sources much easier to locate. Learn More…
